Alarm Systems FAQ

  • What types of alarms are available?

    There are several types:
    Burglar alarms (detect intrusions)
Fire alarms (detect smoke, heat, carbon monoxide, fire sprinkler)
    Panic alarms

Most of these features are combined into one system.

  • What is an alarm system?

An alarm system is a security system designed to detect unauthorized entry or other
emergencies (like fire or carbon monoxide) and alert you and emergency services.

  • What’s the difference between wired and wireless alarm systems?

    • Wired systems use physical wires to connect components.
    • Wireless systems use radio frequency (RF) signals or Wi-Fi. They’re more cost effective to install, more flexible for positioning, and supervised for status.
  • What components are usually included in an alarm system?

    Common components include:

    • Control panel
    • Keypads
    • Motion Detectors
    • Door/window sensors
    • Sirens
    • Cameras (optional)
    • Mobile app (for remote access)

Installation & Setup

  • Can I install the system myself?

We do not sell fully DIY (Do It Yourself) systems but prefer a more DIT (Do It Together) approach. We invite you to participate in the design of your system but will supply you with the resources for professional installation.

  • How long does installation take?

Professional installations may take half a day or more, depending on the system size.

  • Do I need Wi-Fi for my alarm system to work?

Not always. Our systems operate on cellular networks, but most modern smart alarm systems utilize Wi-Fi for redundancy and updates as needed.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

  • Why is my alarm beeping or chirping?

    Common reasons include:

    • Low battery
    • Sensor or system error
    • Power loss
    • Tamper detection
  • What should I do if a sensor isn’t working?

    • Check and replace batteries
    • Ensure it’s securely mounted
    • Reset the sensor via the control panel or app
    • Re-sync or re-pair the sensor
  • Why won’t my system arm or disarm properly?

    • Check for open doors/windows
    • Ensure all sensors are functioning
    • Verify passcode or app connection
    • Restart the control panel
  • What if my alarm triggers falsely?

    • Clean sensors to remove dust or bugs
    • Reposition sensors if they’re picking up pets or environmental motion
    • Check for firmware updates
    • Contact support if false alarms continue
  • How often should I test my system?

You should test your alarm system monthly to ensure all components work correctly. Our systems have a built-in automatic test function.

Troubleshooting Questions

  • What should I do if my alarm goes off accidentally?

Disarm the system using your code. If it’s monitored, contact your provider immediately to prevent dispatch.

  • Why isn’t my motion sensor detecting movement?

    Possible causes:

    • Sensor is obstructed or dirty
    • Batteries are low or dead
    • Sensor is incorrectly positioned or out of alignment
    • Modern sensors do not have lights/LEDs on all of the time

Clean and reposition the sensor and replace batteries if necessary.

  • Why does my alarm go off for no reason?

False alarms can be caused by:

    • Pets triggering motion sensors
    • Drafts or insects affecting window/door sensors
    • Improper sensor calibration
    • Environmental factors (steam, dust, insects etc.)

Review the placement of sensors and consult us for troubleshooting options.

  • My control panel says, “communication failure.” What does that mean?

This means the system can’t connect to the monitoring service. It could be due to:

    • Internet or phone line issues
    • Cellular network failure
    • Power outages
    • Legacy landline failure

Check your internet or phone connection and restart your router or control panel.

Maintenance & Support

  • How long do alarm system batteries last?

Sensor batteries usually last 2–3 years, while control panel backups can last 3–5 years. Check your system’s battery status regularly.

  • Can I upgrade my existing alarm system?

Yes, many systems are modular and can be upgraded with additional sensors, smart home integration, or better connectivity options.

  • Who should I contact for support?

Contact your Phillips team. Keep our support phone numbers handy for quick reference.

Monitoring & Emergency Services

  • Do I need professional monitoring?

Professional monitoring services provide 24/7 emergency dispatch but require a monthly fee. Self-monitoring is free but puts the responsibility on you.

  • What happens when the alarm goes off?

If professionally monitored, the system contacts the monitoring center, which then alerts you and/or emergency services.

  • How often should I test my alarm system?

Most manufacturers recommend testing your system at least once a month and after any power outage or service maintenance.

  • What’s the difference between monitored and unmonitored systems?

A monitored system is connected to a professional monitoring center that contacts emergency services when an alarm is triggered. An unmonitored system relies on local sirens or app notifications to alert the user.

Upgrades & Customization

  • Can I expand my system later?

Yes, our systems allow you to add more sensors, cameras, or smart home integrations over time.

  • Can I integrate my alarm with smart home devices?

Many modern systems work with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit, allowing voice control and automation routines.

At Phillips Alarm, we don’t just install systems—we build peace of mind.
